For over two decades, Menno Versteeg’s songwriting has quietly become something of a national treasure, bringing a uniquely offbeat voice to stories of oddballs, outsiders, and unlikely heroes.
As the frontman of Hollerado and one-quarter of supergroup Anyway Gang, Versteeg has racked up eleven Top 10 singles and played thousands of shows around the world — in basements, stadiums, and everything in between. Never shy of the ridiculous, he also co-wrote the tongue-in-cheek viral superhit “A Little Bit Alexis” for the Emmy-winning TV show Schitt’s Creek.
Along the way, he founded Royal Mountain Records, the fiercely community-minded label behind artists like Alvvays, Mac DeMarco, U.S. Girls, Wolf Parade, and Orville Peck — and home to one of the first artist mental health support initiatives of its kind in the music industry.
Never one to settle on a single creative outlet, Versteeg is also a visual artist whose work has sold internationally and earned two JUNO nominations.
His one-person solo show has been called “a masterclass in how a concert can be so much more than just the music” (Alan Cross / A Journal of Musical Things) — part late-night kitchen stories, part conversation between friends, part something different every time.
And Hollerado - after a six-year hiatus and nearly twenty years since their critically acclaimed debut Record In A Bag - are back, recently completing a sold out cross-Canada tour, and currently sitting #7 at Alternative and Modern Rock with their new single - “What Killed Elvis Presley?”
Twenty-seven years in, Versteeg is at his lyrical best and most musically diverse, proving that… well… he’s not really sure. When asked, he shrugs: “I just want to keep going. ’Cause if that isn’t just the best, what is?”
